“Red Square and Kremlin,” almost every foreigner would answer to my question about places they wish to visit in Moscow. Come on, guys! Moscow is far more interesting than you can imagine! Here you will read about places which are difficult to find in typical guide-books.

#1 Epiphany Monastery

If you ask Muscovites about this place, hardly many of them will tell you that Epiphany Monastery is the second-oldest male monastery in Moscow. It was founded during the reign of Daniil Aleksandrovich (XIII century), the youngest son of Alexander Nevsky and forefather of all the Grand Dukes of Moscow.

Being light-red and green, it has many white decorations and an intensely bright golden dome. Despite seeming overly ornate, it is not pompous and makes a lasting powerful impression on you. After admiring the view of the church, do not hurry to leave this place – come closer to the lane.

Put up in 2007, a statue of the Likhud brothers is rather new, but is worth looking at. The Likhud Brothers, Greek monks from Cephalonia, are famous for founding the first higher education organisation in Russia – the Slavic Greek Latin Academy in Moscow, which happened in 1687.

#2 Ryabushinsky’s Mansion (Gorky’s House)

This 20th century mansion was built in Art Nouveau style for Stepan Ryabushinsky, an entrepreneur, banker and benefactor. He wanted an estate with an elegant house and buildings for his servants. Fyodor Schechtel, an architect famous for his extraordinary works and unusual way of thinking, implemented his wish. The work took around 3 years to be completed.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 made Ryabushinsky and his family emigrate to Italy, so the mansion was under state ownership. It became the home of Maksim Gorky in 1931 (you can find his table in the house). By the way, the writer didn’t like it at all. He once said the building was “absurd”, but it was possible to work there.

Having come inside the house, you will see stained-glass window, columns and lavishly decorated white ceiling. The ladder is worth a separate talk: its handrail almost flows as a forest stream.

#3 The Paustovsky Museum

Nestled in the forest, this small grey-blue wooden house should be noticed. Why? Firstly, I bet, you will learn something unknown about the life of Konstantin Paustovsky. Secondly, this museum does not look like all those large buildings with many stores; instead, it resembles a hut, where you can warm up while listening to the stories about the writer.

Besides, you will like your way through the Kuzminki forest. Couples would not miss “The bench of devotion and love”.

#4 The Abramtsevo Estate-Museum

You will find this cozy country place in Moscow Oblast, not far away from the small town called Sergiev Posad. In the middle of 19th century, the owner of the estate was Savva Mamontov, an entrepreneur and patron of the art.

Here he founded an art club, which is frequently named as “Mamontovsky”. Many famous Russian painters (such as Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel and others) visited Abramtsevo. The informal motto of club members was “the beauty of use and the use of beauty” because the club itself did not have any official regulations.

You are to visit an old workshop, church, "Baba Yaga’s home" and see the “Vrubel’s bench”. What’s more, the museum offers a wide range of collections to view.

#5 Kuskovo

Kuskovo is not amongst places situated in the city centre. However, you will enjoy yourself during a leisurely walk along paths and beneath green arches, passing by ideal hedgerows, ponds and a big cage with peafowls. Built in the mid-18th century, Kuskovo was the summer country estate of the Sheremetev family. It is one of the few summer estates near Moscow which are still preserved.

If you are here, do not miss a chance of visiting the Russian State Museum of Ceramics, the only specialised museum in Russia which has one of the best ceramics collections in the world. The museum is located in the biggest building - a former orangerie, designed by Fyodor Argounov.

The Palace of Kuskovo has been restored; now the building surprises visitors by its beauty. That is the reason why loads of couples choose this estate for their weddings. The initial interior of the palace is well-preserved, so you have an opportunity to see all portraits and decorations with your own eyes.

By the way, the Russian band “Би-2” produced their latest music video in Kuskovo. The song is called “Black Sun”.
